Bare Root
How do i plant a bare root tree at this time of the year?
I have purchased a BETULA PENDULA BARE ROOTED SILVER BIRCH TREE.
I want to know how to plant it, i have soaked the roots in water for a few hours and have a mixture of John innes number 3 and periltie ready to plant it in a large pot.
The tree is aprox 3 foot high, once i put it in the pot what do i do with it?
I dont have a greenhouse to put it in so will it be ok in a sheltered spot outside?
I know i wont see any signs of life untill the spring but is there a way of checking the tree is alive before then?
Why Transplanting is Traumatic
Whether from a nursery field to the city tree lawn or just from one place in
your yard to another, it’s the roots that suffer when trees are transplanted.
Consider this: Shade tree roots are found primarily in the top 12 inches of soil.
Tiny absorbing roots, responsible for most of the tree’s intake of water and
nutrients, are in the top several inches of soil. Roots not only grow horizontally
beyond the dripline, there often is a higher percentage of them beyond the
dripline than within it.
An unbelievable 90% of tree roots are routinely left behind in the nursery at the
time of harvest. The fine absorbing roots that are harvested are easily broken
off, damaged and desiccated. Water stress, resulting in part from the
tremendous reduction in root mass, is the main reason transplanted trees fail.
