Bin Composter
how do i get rid of the tons of flies inside my compost bin?
I have mint and sage growing near the bin, I have tried spraying the bin and outside porch area with soapy Dr Bonner's peppermint water, I even found an Amish trick with a plastic bottle filled with sugar and vinegar to trap them. I am going crazy as the flies are in the house(at least 12 at a time), all over the awning outside, and swarm out when I open my bin.
I do not put meat, or greasy stuff in the composter, so I don't know what else to do!
Please, can anyone help?
p.s. i do have dogs, but I pick up their poop and throw it in the garbage can which is near the street in the front of the house, then i spray the rest of the poop away with water.
I have a pelagonium shrub planted next to my compost and it is a natural fly repellant. In summer, i break off a big branch and put it in the kitchen which helps with the flies. also, maybe placing some sticky fly tape near the bin will help. good luck with this.
