Gazebo Set
Do saddlebred people actually do this, or is this just weird?
My friend rides saddlebreds competitively. Her horses have gone to Devon and done very well, so she's not just some backyard rider. She told me that at her old barn, they had a HUGE ring with a gazebo in the middle. No jumps set up, it was a saddlebred only barn. In order to bombproof the horses, she said that her old trainer would take fireworks and set them off in the ring. Not aiming at the horses obviously, just kind of set them off in the ring. The little ones that just fizzle and spin in circles on the ground making sparks, not the big ones that explode in the air.
Anyone ever heard of this? I'm not planning on doing it, just wondering if it's commonly done in the saddlebred world... she seemed to think it was perfectly normal, I had more of a WTF reaction!
I didn't think it was "mean", just weird. I ride hunters and we never do things like that.
Haha, yeah, that's totally normal in show barns. They actually have to post "no fireworks" signs at shows.
It's not really to bombproof them, though... It's to get them excited. As soon as the fireworks go off, they pick their heads up, prick their ears, and left their legs as high as they can. Saddlebreds, as a breed, LOVE to show off and that's just how they act when they're excited. They do it in the show ring, too.
We usually use the ones that spin around and make sparks (like you said), ones that only make loud noises, smoke bombs, and sometimes roman candles (which are held by the trainer and pointed at the ground - not the sky).
We also get things of baby powder and puff them into the air. It looks just like smoke but is more economical.
EDIT -- Hahaha, Bliss... you sound SO ignorant that it actually made me laugh. Yeah, I'm sure the show horses are scared to death of fireworks that they see all the time. That makes a lot of sense. If your friend's horse was ACTUALLY trained by a trainer who used plastic bags, he wouldn't have spooked at them. It's far more likely that he spooked at them because he wasn't used to seeing them.
What on earth are you talking about when you say that the Saddlebreds only show that kind of action when they're free and loose? That's supposed to prove that it's UNnatural? Because it does the opposite...
Almost all Saddlebreds are ridden at home in a snaffle. We ride them in double bridles a few times before a show and at the show and then they go back to the snaffle. Look at any picture of a Saddlebred being ridden or ground driven at their barn and I bet you 90% of them will be in a snaffle.

I couldn't find a single picture of a Saddlebred in anything other than a snaffle not at a show.
"Rubber bands," haha. I'm guessing you don't have a clue how they work if you don't even know what they're called. The "stretchies" are STRETCHY. They are loose enough that they don't shorten the horse's stride at all. When they horses have them on, they actually have more front-end action than when they don't. They are for strengthening the legs and shoulders - that's it. If they pull too hard against them, they break. There's no way they can hurt themselves.
Are you seriously comparing them to the Big Lick Walkers? That shows your ignorance more than anything. Saddlebreds are BRED to look the way they do in the show ring. BLWs are abused and forced.

THAT is a horse that has been abused. Breeds simply cannot change that drastically that fast with just genetics and training.

Saddlebred people take horses with natural potential and make them look better for the show ring. Some of those people might use inhumane methods, but MOST of them don't. That's EXACTLY how it is with WP, reining, roping, cutting, dressage, h/j, cross country, and every other discipline (not including BLWs). People like you just ASSUME they're being abused because they look different to your style of riding.
ONE crazy horse you knew is not proof that all Saddlebreds are horribly abused. Not even close.
