Why do light bulbs last for different lengths of time?
When you put light bulbs from the same box into a fixture that contains more than one bulb why dont all of the bulbs burn out at the same time. It can take weeks to months inbetween burnouts.
The incandescent light bulb has been around for a long time and until fairly recently they were pretty much the same. They use tungsten filaments to produce the light and the air in the bulb is removed as much as possible and replaced with a mixture of argon and nitrogen. The electrical current through the filament causes the heat that makes it glow. In the argon nitrogen atmosphere there is a reaction that causes a small amount of the tungsten to be taken from the filament and it is deposited on different areas inside the bulb. When you remove the bulb you can see how some of the tungsten has been deposited on the bulb itself. Of course when so much tungsten is transferred the filament will burn out. Some contributing factors that would cause early failure. One being heat. If a bulb is in an in-closed fixture it will not last as long as one that is open to the atmosphere. A bulb that is exposed to vibrations or shock will also fail early. Of course there may be a difference in the atmosphere inside the bulb. If all of the oxygen inside the bulb isn't evacuated before it is filled with argon and nitrogen it will fail early.
There are a lot of alternatives now that are more efficient and last longer so I'm sure the old fill gasses will soon be a thing of the past......MORE THAN YOU WANTED TO KNOW????
