Roof Green
what would the scientific principles be for a green roof?
i am conducting a science project and i need to state the scientific principles...what are they?
Since we are worrying about global warming, the roof should dump the least amount of waste heat the atmosphere. This implies either a light color or a mirror reflection of light back into the sky. It should also keep solar heat from getting into the building in hot weather and keep heat inside in cold weather, implying good insulating properties. However, it might also perform additional useful things like generating electricity, or heating water either for space heating or hot water uses like bathing, though some of those uses will conflict with the high reflectivity given first. So a trade off analysis taking all costs and benefits into account are required to come up with the best compromise. A roof might also be used as a clean rainwater catchment surface to reduce the demands on other clean water supplies.
And, of course, everything manufactured consumes resources, so any of the above benefits must be balanced against the resources consumed to produce it. The perfect roof (without considering resources consumed) will not be cost effective and therefore not best with all things considered.
