Japanese speakers; at what age did you start learning Japanese and are you fluent in the language now?
This question is mainly directed towards non-native speakers.
I heard that it becomes very difficult to learn a language when you are an adult, is this true?
Any adult has the power to learn any language. Bonobo chimps can learn Sign Language. Mentally challenged people learn other languages. What becomes hard as an adult is getting the same type of exposure and constant help that children get. Adults have other worries and other things to tend to, such as a job, family, etc.
I'm 35 and I started Japanese last year. I'm intermediate now, which roughly means that I can carry a conversation about daily events and I can tell you what I did today or what happened to me.
I've read that for an English speaker to reach that kind of level in French should take 24 weeks. To learn Japanese, it would take 63 weeks. The more different a language is from your own, the longer it will take to learn.
EDIT: Engy -- how can you say "I am not fluent" AND "I can hold a good conversation"...??
