Is it better to dry lay or wet lay a flagstone patio?
We currently have a flagstone patio in cement and mortar. Its about 20 years old, and looks horrible. We are debating if we should do a dry lay installation this time or do a wet lay again. If we do a wet lay again, will we have the same issue in another 10-20 years?
I prefer to dry lay them myself, but either should last a long time if the area is prepped properly before you lay the patio.
The area beneath the patio should be excavated to a depth of at least 5". Compact the subsoil, then lay a separation fabric, then a 4" layer of compacted gravel, then a 1" layer of sand, then your paving stones.
